![]() Our list of Ramones Albums Ranked Worst to Best puts the rest in perspective. Those early ones are undisputed classics. A loyal group of listeners steadily grew with those first four albums, but as the '80s wore on and they reshuffled their lineup, the Ramones often were pulled in different directions that contrasted with their twin aspirations of becoming huge stars while staying true to their roots.īy the time they called it quits in 1996, the Ramones had racked up more than two dozen albums. Only problem: their buzz outweighed their fans. Inspired by '60s pop culture (including garage rock, girl groups, bubblegum pop, monster movies and a mix of New York City attitude and Middle-America trash), the Ramones passed it all through a post-Watergate filter that made them the right band for the right time. That made them tight, focused and professional – a contrast, in many ways, to the punk label they were slapped with almost immediately. Over the years, several of their songs became belated pop-culture mainstays during their lifetime, however, they were barely a radio presence, meaning they needed to be on the road almost constantly to make money. I got excited - and he realized I’d actually seen it and knew the band well.Like many of the groundbreaking groups they influenced, and the ones that came before them, the Ramones didn't sell a ton of albums, but their role in the shaping of modern music was immense. This George Costanza-with-a-beard shuffles up to me, sighs because he has done this a million times with her and says “Yeah, Ma, okay” turns to me and says “yeah Hi I’m Jim Fields and I directed the documentary End of The Century.” “My son - he directed it.” She turns her head to the group she’s with “ JIMMY!!! C’mere - this guy’s seen your movie!!” “Excuse me? Oh! The new documentary? Sure, I…” She gestures at me/my t-shirt, and then barks at me in a delightful NY/Jewish patois “you know that band?! You like that band?!” One of the old women had been working through the reservation with the host.Īs the woman comes by me, she sees my t-shirt. This group comes in of two elderly couples and two more in their 40’s. We showed up at 4pm to set up ahead of the dinner crowd. I met the Director of this doc under hilarious circumstances: I had a gig in Westchester above NYC. One of my favorites was hearing that "Crass Commercialism" part of Black Flag's Everything Went Black - which was the first thing I heard from that band. That started a pretty much run of finding all sorts of stuff many times again having a WTF is this experience, which was some of the genius of hearing this punk rock stuff for the first time. It definitely was a WTF is this music experience, but I really dug it and thought it was funny - only thing I had at that point really to compare was the first Violent Femmes tape. I remember getting the first LP on cassette in some mall when I was in high school like in '86 and saying to my buddy who was with me, at least it has 14 songs so it must be pretty long not knowing that the whole record was like less than 30 minutes long. I think I might had heard 'Rock and Roll High School' off MTV somewhere before I heard the first Ramones record, but they were still this kind of unknown thing I had read about them a bunch but never really heard their music.
